A Saturday morning just isn’t a Saturday morning if it doesn’t include an early-morning market, your basket overflowing with fresh farmer veggies and a steaming cup of locally-brewed coffee in hand. That’s why we put this list together for you, of our 6 absolute favorite markets in Cape Town! If you haven’t already given them a visit during your weekend en-devours, then they are a MUST!
1. Bay Harbor Market
This all-weekend market is situated in a re-purposed fish factory in the old section of Hout Bay Harbor, and houses more than 100 stalls in tented alleys and courtyards. The well-laid out space ensures that no matter how crowded it gets, you never feel cramped!
When Friday, 5pm – 9pm, Saturday & Sunday, 9:30am – 4pm
2. The Oranjezich Market
If you are looking for stunning sea views and a range of fresh produce on your Saturday morning, then this market is for you. The Oranjezich market celebrates local food, culture and community in support of the educational mission of the nonprofit Oranjezicht City Farm. You will find fresh-from-the-patch veggies and herbs, fruit, bread, organic dairy products, ethically sourced meats, you name it! There is also an array of food stalls selling cooked and raw dishes for all palates and preferences, from carnivores to vegans, chocoholics to diabetics.
When: Saturday, 8.30am – 2pm
3. The Greenmarket Square
You cannot visit Cape Town and not visit one of it’s oldest markets, set on a cobbled square between Short and Longmarket Street. African curios predominate this market, but there is still an exciting buzz as well as evidence of the city’s most colorful and eccentric characters.
When: Monday to Saturday from 9am to 4pm
4. The Watershed
The Watershed is situated in a warehouse at the famous V&A Waterfront and houses over 150 stores of locally designed goods and crafts.
When: EVERYDAY from 10am-7pm, is that doesn’t convince you to give them a visit then we don’t know what will!
5. Route 44 Market
As the name suggests, the Route 44 market can be found on route 44 in Stellenbosch. At this market, rain is never an issue! It takes place under cosy marquees and is surrounded by beautiful vineyards.There is live entertainment, craft and home-ware stalls perfect for leisurely browsing, as well as a wide selection of yummy delectable foods!
When: Saturday & Sunday, 10am – 4pm
6. The Old Biscuit Mill
We definitely saved the best for last, as this may or may not be our favorite markets (shhh). The Old Biscuit Mill is an oldie but a goodie and has to be one of the coolest city hangouts in Cape Town on a Saturday morning, striking the perfect balance between superb food and drinks, trendy clothes and accessories. Not to mention that they sell the best churros (with nutella dipping sauce) in all the land.
When: Saturday, 9am – 3pm
