Meet George Gawie:
So if you didn’t have the pleasure of having George accompanying you during one of your wine tours at The Constantia Wine Tour, here is a little about him:
George is a proud Capetonian with a career history in Customer Service Management and Marketing and was always truly passionate to deliver service of a high standard. He was a previous tour guide at The Constantia Wine Tour and has just recently left in order to tour around Southern Africa. Pretty exciting stuff! We decided to catch up with him and his adventures to find out what he has been up to:
How would you summarize your time with The Constantia Wine Tour?
With my time with TCWT I had the pleasure of doing a few things that I’m passionate about. That is touring around the Cape Wine lands with guests from all over the globe, passing on my wine knowledge to visiting guests, discussing food and wine and also highlighting the historical & cultural influence of this unique wine region. I also find joy in seeing how our guests bask in the African sun whilst indulging on a crisp Sauvignon Blanc.
The big question: What are you up to now?
I am currently traveling through Southern Africa as a guide camp-assistant for a Overland Tour Adventure company. Our tour routes are usually from Cape Town to Victoria Falls, and it can be camping or accommodated through Namibia, Botswana & Zimbabwe. A normal day for me would consist out of waking up at 4:30am to shower, pull down my tent and assist the main cook preparing breakfast for 15 to 25 guest. If we don’t have a game drive, bush walk or tour activity in the morning at a certain place we usually drive at 7am for about 3 to 6 hours to our next bush camp or accommodation. Lunch is prepared next to the road if we are driving or at a camp from our mobile kitchen. Whilst driving I will keep guests entertained and point out places of interest and also supply additional information when required.
Apart from Constantia – what other places that you have visited have delicious wines?
Other then Constantia my favorite wine regions is in Stellenbosch & Franschhoek. My favorite wine can change by the day, my mood or the occasion. Both regions also offer premium wines, endless views with dramatic landscapes, including experiences that cater to everyone’s needs be it sculpture gardens, art galleries or wild life game drives and historical walks.
How and when did your passion for touring surface?
It happened quite by accident, I was completing my marketing & advertising program, required to do an internship and was fortunate enough to be one of the two interns selected by Blake from TCWT. We had to complete a marketing activation presentation as a group and present this to Blake who then selected the two intern candidates based on the presentation and a follow up interview. After less then a month in the office, I did a private tour with two guest from the Netherlands. It was such a joy and pleasure and felt like I had found my calling. I still have that feeling to this day.
What have you learnt through your travels?
As much as I’m thrilled at new experiences, home is we the heart is. Although, I nearly left my heart at the majestic sight of Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe.
What advice do you have for someone who is wanting to travel?
Just do it! We live on an amazing blue planet with so much to enjoy and see. Plan it well and step out of your comfort zone.
Where do you see yourself in the future?
I definitely see myself in the tourism industry doing what I enjoy most.
George is on a pretty incredible venture and we wish him all the best for what is to come. As for the different places he will be travelling, and what else he will be getting up to? Well that’s another blog post for another time!
